Prayer flags fluttering in Ladakh

Top 5 Do’s & Don’ts in Ladakh

By Ladakh Ride Team 4 min read

Ladakh is a sensitive ecosystem with a unique culture. To ensure a respectful and safe journey, here are the essential rules every traveler should follow.

The DOs

  • Acclimatize: Spend at least the first 24-48 hours in Leh doing absolutely nothing but resting and hydrating. This is crucial for AMS prevention.
  • Dress Modestly: When visiting monasteries, cover your shoulders and knees. It’s a sign of respect for the local culture.
  • Refill Water Bottles: Carry a reusable bottle and refill it at hotels or filtered water stations to reduce plastic waste.
  • Ask for Permission: Always ask before taking photos of monks, locals, or inside prayer halls.
  • Carry Cash: ATMs are scarce outside Leh. Always carry enough cash for smaller villages and camps.

The DON'Ts

  • Don't Litter: Ladakh faces a huge waste management crisis. Pack out what you pack in. Do not throw wrappers out of the car window.
  • Don't Rush: Trying to cover Nubra and Pangong in one day is dangerous due to altitude changes. Take your time.
  • Don't Drink Alcohol on Day 1: Alcohol dehydrates you and worsens altitude sickness symptoms.
  • Don't Rely on Google Maps: Times and routes on maps can be misleading in the mountains. Trust your local driver.
  • Don't Disturb Wildlife: If you see marmots or other wildlife, observe from a distance. Do not feed them.
